The victory of People's National Congress (PNC) candidate Suha Ibrahim in the Meedhoo Council presidential election reflects public support for President Dr Mohamed Muizzu's reform agenda, PNC Parliamentary Group Leader Ibrahim Falah has said.
Suha secured victory in the election held to decide the President of Dhaalu Meedhoo Council after a court-ordered revote, winning 54.09 per cent of the ballots cast. The result also gave the PNC control of all three seats on the island council. The election was conducted after the High Court ruled that the two candidates who contested the original election had received an equal number of votes.
Speaking to MMTV from Meedhoo, Falah said the outcome demonstrated that the PNC could secure victories in elections when it adopts a focused campaign strategy.
Referring to the recent parliamentary by-election, he noted that the PNC had around 700 registered members in the constituency, while the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) had more than 1,300 members. Despite this, he said the PNC candidate had won the ballot boxes placed in Hithadhoo.
Falah said the Meedhoo result showed continued public confidence in the Government and President Dr Muizzu's policies and reforms, adding that it provided encouragement for the party's future political efforts.
He also said the PNC had effectively contested against the opposition alliance in Meedhoo, arguing that support extended beyond the Maldives Development Alliance (MDA) candidate to include backing from opposition parties such as the MDP and the People's National Front (PNF).
President Dr Muizzu and First Lady Sajidha Mohamed arrived in Meedhoo on Sunday and received a warm welcome from residents. A special event is scheduled to be held on the island to celebrate the PNC's election victory, with the President and First Lady expected to attend.
