President Dr Mohamed Muizzu and First Lady Sajidha Mohamed received a warm welcome from residents upon their arrival in Dhaalu Meedhoo Sunday evening.

The visit comes after People's National Congress (PNC) candidate Suha Ibrahim won the election for President of the Meedhoo Council, defeating Maldives Development Alliance (MDA) candidate Mohamed Shahid and securing all three seats on the council for the ruling party.

Suha won the election with 529 votes, while Shahid received 449 votes. Following the result, President Dr Muizzu congratulated Suha in a post on X.

The President and First Lady travelled to Meedhoo to take part in celebrations marking the completion of the island's harbour project and was accompanied by cabinet ministers, Members of Parliament and senior figures of the PNC leadership during the visit.

A special ceremony is scheduled to be held in Meedhoo as part of the visit, with activities set to take place on the island tonight.
