Maldives submitted Biennial Transparency Report (BTR) to United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), becoming the third small island nation to submit this report.
Under the transparency and accountability framework of the Paris Agreement, Maldives is required to submit this report before the deadline of December 13, 2024.
The report contains detailed information on the country's greenhouse gas emissions and efforts to mitigate and adapt to the impacts of climate change.
Additionally, the report outlines progress towards meeting the country's Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) and details the support received, as well as the assistance required, to implement climate action initiatives.
Following the submission of this report, Maldives received the BTR Champion certificate in recognition of its commitment to transparency in climate action.
The report was prepared under the initiative of the Department of Climate Change in collaboration with various Government Ministries, private businesses, private organisations, and international partners.
Minister of Climate Change, Environment and Energy, Thoriq Ibrahim, also emphasised that the submission of the first BTR marks a significant step in the Maldives’ climate action efforts.
