Minister of Tourism and Environment, Thoriq Ibrahim, has announced plans to develop eco-tourism in two protected islands - Keylakunu in Haa Dhaalu Atoll and Farukolhu in Shaviyani Atoll - as part of the Government’s push for sustainable tourism development.
Speaking at a press conference at the President’s Office, the Minister said that preparations are underway to establish a new biosphere reserve in Laamu Atoll, which would become the fourth of its kind in the Maldives. Environmental studies are currently being conducted in the region.
Minister Thoriq highlighted that eco-tourism facilities will be designed for Keylakunu, which is known for its rich biodiversity and ecological significance. The island will be promoted as a destination for nature-based tourism, offering visitors an immersive, eco-friendly experience. A project management team has already been appointed for Farukolhu, where eco-tourism infrastructure is also being planned.
In addition, the Ministry is reviewing proposals to open nature parks in every atoll, reflecting growing interest in environmental tourism across the country. The Minister also acknowledged the challenge of managing the Maldives’ 93 protected areas, noting ongoing efforts to enhance management, public awareness, and staff training.
