The People’s Majlis Committee on Independent Institutions has passed a bill to amend the law to give the President the authority to appoint the president and vice-president of the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) and the Elections Commission (EC).
The bill states that the purpose of this amendment is to strengthen management of independent commissions and to standardise the appointment process for the positions of the president and vice-president.
Currently, Article 7 of the Act provides that the president and vice-president of both the Commissions must be appointed from among their members. The Commission is required to notify the President and Parliament of the appointment within 48 hours.
The proposed amendment to Article 7 of the Act states that the President shall appoint a president or vice-president of the Commission from among its members.
Whenever an appointment to the position of president or vice-president is necessary, the President shall submit the names of the candidates to the People’s Majlis. The President will then appoint the individual approved by Parliament.
In the event that the president or vice president of the Commission wishes to resign, they must submit a resignation letter to the President.
