Parliament has passed the Anti-Defection bill today, with 78 members of parliament voting in favour of the bill and 13 members voting against it.
Under this amendment, if a member is removed from their party or resigns from it, they will lose their seat in Parliament.
The amendment, introduced by MP Mohamed Shahid on behalf of the Government, stipulates if a person who was elected to parliament as a representative of a particular party resigns from that party, joins another party, or is removed from the party during their term, they will no longer hold their seat in parliament. Additionally, independent members who join a political party will also lose their parliamentary seat.
The bill was passed today after receiving approval from the Whole House Commission, where 75 out of 89 members present voting in favour of the bill.
The Anti-Defection Act, enacted in April, mandated a member to resign from the party if they floor-cross. However, there were no legal consequences in doing so.
