Zakat Fund supports over 1,000 patients with medical aid in 2024

The Ministry of Islamic Affairs has announced that the Zakat Fund has provided medical assistance to over 1,000 individuals this year.

Since its establishment in 2019, the fund has supported more than 8,000 people in need of medical care, with a record 2,379 beneficiaries assisted in 2023.

The Ministry highlighted that the Zakat Fund prioritises critical health needs, allocating significant resources to cancer treatment and bone marrow transplants for children with thalassaemia.

This year, MVR 10 million has been allocated to the National Social Protection Agency (NSPA) specifically for thalassaemia-related bone marrow transplants.

Between 2019 and November 2024, the Zakat Fund has spent a total of MVR 84.6 million on medical assistance. In 2024 alone, MVR 9.1 million has been distributed to 1,017 beneficiaries.

The Ministry also reported an increase in Zakat contributions, with MVR 88.2 million collected as Zakat, MVR 9.7 million was contributed as Fitr Zakat, as of October 2024.
