The Ministry of Health has decided to temporarily relocate Vilimalé Hospital to the Amaan Hiyaa building to facilitate the construction of a new 112-bed tertiary hospital on the island.
The relocation will be carried out by the Malé City Group of Hospitals, following the ministry’s directive.
The new tertiary hospital, supported by the Chinese government, is expected to significantly enhance healthcare services in the Greater Malé region. A Letter of Exchange between the Maldives and China was signed on 4 June to support the hospital’s detailed design phase.
The upgraded facility will consist of two buildings and house dedicated departments for outpatient, inpatient, emergency, diagnostic, ICU, and hemodialysis services.
The current Vilimalé Hospital serves a population of around 15,000 but lacks adequate infrastructure, with only three inpatient rooms and five emergency beds. The expansion underscores the urgent need for improved medical facilities on the island.
