Deputy Minister for Climate Change, Environment, and Energy Mohamed Raghib has been dismissed from his position after filing a constitutional case challenging the city status of GDh. Thinadhoo.
The decision was announced by Chief Spokesperson at the President’s Office, Heena Waleed on X confirming that President Dr Mohamed Muizzu relieved Raghib of his duties due to his legal action against the State.
Raghib had previously submitted a case to the High Court alleging that Thinadhoo’s city status, granted during former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih's administration, was based on fraudulent population figures.
However, this move has sparked controversy, with the Government maintaining that a political appointee cannot act in opposition to State decisions.
Earlier this month, the High Court ruled that individuals holding positions appointed by the president are not permitted to advocate against the State, highlighting a prior instance where Raghib's arguments were dismissed for similar reasons.
The case against Thinadhoo's city status remains ongoing, with Raghib’s dismissal further intensifying debates over the boundaries of political roles and individual advocacy within Government ranks.
