Following serious concerns and debate, the Media and Broadcasting Bill has been officially withdrawn.
Media organisations expressed concerns about the bill proposed by Thulhadhoo Parliament Member Abdul Hannan Abubakr, which sought to establish a new Media and Broadcasting Commission by combining the existing Media Council and Broadcasting Commission.
During the Hafthaa 52 ceremony on 17 November, marking one year of the current Government, President Dr Mohamed Muizzu addressed the issue.
Reflecting on the bill put forward by independent lawmakers, President Dr Muizzu affirmed that the current media bill did not align with his beliefs. He emphasised that he had no interest in controlling the media and instead expressed his commitment to expanding media freedoms.
Meanwhile, Speaker of the People's Majlis Abdul Raheem Abdulla highlighted the legislative journey of the bill during the ongoing 54th session. He noted that the Maldives Media Commission Bill had been read during the 49th session of the People's Majlis on 13 November.
The bill was formally withdrawn in accordance with Article 101 of the Parliament's procedural rules on 19 November by MP Abdul Hannan Abubakr.
