President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has announced that construction of a new domestic airport in Vihafaru, located near Velidhoo in Noonu Atoll, will begin early next year.

The announcement was made during the President’s address toresidents of Noonu Holhudhoo where he outlined the Administration’s development plans for the atoll. Highlighting the need for accessible transport infrastructure, President Dr Muizzu stated that the new airport would cater to the Velidhoo, Fodhdhoo, and Holhudhoo region in line with the Government’s policy to ensure that every inhabited island is within approximately 30 minutes’ travel time of an airport, supporting improved accessibility and regional connectivity.

President Dr Muizzu also reaffirmed plans to further upgrade Maafaru International Airport to support high-end tourism. The upgrades include new terminal facilities, additional services, and the development of a city hotel to enhance the airport’s capacity and service standards.

The Vihafaru airport is envisioned as a strategic investment for both the medium and long term. The President noted that the project aligns with wider economic initiatives in the area, including a newly approved Special Economic Zone (SEZ) for a township development. The airport is expected to strengthen access to nearby resorts and increase the region’s appeal for tourism and investment. Construction is scheduled to begin in early 2026, with the airport expected to be completed within two years.
