The Housing Development Corporation (HDC), in partnership with the Environment Protection Agency (EPA) and the Maldives Marine Research Institute (MMRI), has launched its Coral Garden Project to restore coral ecosystems in Hulhumalé Channel Park.

The project was inaugurated with a programme focused on collecting a specific type of coral from the eastern reef of Hulhumalé. According to HDC, the initiative will be implemented in phases, with additional coral planting planned in the Channel Park over the course of the coming year.

HDC stated that the primary goal of the initiative is to support the regeneration of marine biodiversity in the area. The Corporation also emphasised that the effort forms part of its commitment to enhancing community engagement and environmental responsibility.

As part of the initiative, HDC teams are actively working on site, with Modular Artificial Reef Structure (MARRS) frames deployed to monitor coral growth, health, and survival.

Commenting on the launch, HDC Managing Director Mohamed Mauroof Jameel said the project aims to reintroduce marine species to the area and develop a thriving underwater garden.

The launch event saw the participation of officials from HDC, the EPA, and the MMRI.
