The Maldives Ministry of Economic Development and Trade (MoEDT), in collaboration with the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), has announced an ambitious initiative aimed at bolstering the country's creative economy.

This two year project is set to empower local creators, entrepreneurs, and small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) by equipping them with vital intellectual property (IP) skills and fostering innovation.

The programme, titled the Maldives Creative Economy IP Training Project, aims to achieve four key objectives: equipping participants with comprehensive IP skills, fostering the creative economy, monetising and safeguarding creativity, and showcasing the nation's cultural heritage and innovation.

The Ministry emphasises the project’s dual focus on both domestic and global impacts, aiming to integrate Maldivian creativity into international markets while preserving local identity. With targeted support for brand development, business scaling, and legal frameworks, the programme promises to cultivate a robust and innovative creative ecosystem.

In an official tweet, the Ministry extended an invitation to creative entrepreneurs and SMEs to submit their Expressions of Interest (EOIs) for the initiative. Submissions, which include a portfolio, must be sent by 20th December 2024 to [email protected] with the subject reference "Maldives Creative Economy IP Training Project."

The programme offers participants guidance in brand development, IP protection, and business scaling, essential tools for unlocking growth potential in the creative sector.

The Maldives Creative Economy project is an encouraging step forward for a nation eager to diversify its economy. As the project progresses, it is anticipated to provide invaluable support to local innovators.
