The Office of the Children’s Ombudsperson has reiterated its call for the public and media to refrain from disclosing personal information about children, emphasising the importance of safeguarding their rights and dignity.
Regarding the issue, in a statement issued this week, the Ombudsperson's office stressed the state’s constitutional duty to protect children from physical and mental abuse. It added that the Maldives, as a signatory to several international conventions on child rights, is bound to provide special protection for minors.
The office raised concerns about recent instances where media outlets have reported details that compromise the safety and dignity of children.
"Such actions risk undermining the dignity and safety of the child, and the publication of such information fails to safeguard their interests. Instead, it may expose the child to violence, harm, or abuse," the statement warned.
Additionally, the Ombudsperson's office warned that any instance of such reporting, whether direct or indirect, would be subject to action. It also emphasised the importance of adhering to legal boundaries surrounding the disclosure of information about children, particularly those who are victims of crimes or in vulnerable situations.
The statement serves as a reminder to media organisations of their ethical and legal obligations to protect children’s privacy, urging compliance to prevent further violations.
