Mohamed Nasheed, former President of the Maldives, has been awarded the prestigious 2024 Global Citizen Award by Henley & Partners, a leading international residence and citizenship advisory firm. The accolade was presented during the Global Citizenship Conference held in Singapore, an event that draws influential leaders and changemakers from around the world.
The Global Citizen Award, now in its 18th year, recognises individuals who have made significant contributions to the global community. This year’s award, given in partnership with the Andan Foundation, a Swiss non-governmental organisation, honours Nasheed’s groundbreaking work in human rights and environmental advocacy.
Henley & Partners lauded Nasheed as a “dedicated champion for climate action and human rights.” His leadership on the international stage, particularly in advocating for small island nations vulnerable to the impacts of climate change, was highlighted as a defining aspect of his career.
Nasheed has been instrumental in raising awareness about the existential threats faced by nations on the frontlines of climate change. He currently serves as the Secretary-General of the Climate Vulnerable Forum (CVF), a coalition of 70 countries disproportionately affected by global warming. Through his work with the CVF, Nasheed has promoted renewable energy initiatives and led climate resilience projects, influencing international climate policy to better address the needs of vulnerable populations.
Nasheed played a significant role in introducing multi-party democracy to the Maldives and has held prominent political positions, including Member of Parliament and Speaker of the Maldivian Parliament. Although no longer active in domestic politics, he continues to contribute to global discussions, particularly in areas such as climate advocacy and human rights.
“President Nasheed’s dedication to humanitarian work and climate action for vulnerable communities is truly extraordinary,” said Dr Christian H. Kaelin, Chairman of Henley & Partners and Founder of the Andan Foundation. “As a steadfast advocate for our planet and its most at-risk populations, he embodies the spirit of global citizenship, bridging divides and championing a sustainable future.”
Accepting the honour, Nasheed expressed gratitude and reiterated the importance of collective action. “I am deeply honoured to accept this award, which underscores our shared commitment to addressing the climate crisis and protecting those most at risk,” he said. “Real change begins with unity, and together, our shared humanity can overcome the challenges that shape our future.”
Currently residing in Ghana, Nasheed continues to focus on international advocacy, particularly in climate and environmental issues. His political party, The Democrats, issued a statement congratulating him on the award, describing his contributions as invaluable to both the Maldives and the broader global community.
Mohamed Nasheed’s recognition has been widely celebrated, highlighting his contributions to global human rights and environmental sustainability. The award acknowledges his work in climate advocacy and social equity, emphasizing his efforts to address challenges faced by vulnerable communities and promote sustainability.
