The Government has announced that redevelopment work on the Rasfannu beach area in Malé will begin later this month, with two State-owned companies tasked with carrying out the project.

According to the Ministry of Construction, Housing and Infrastructure, the Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) will be responsible for coastal protection measures, including addressing erosion, modifying sections of the outer wall, improving water flow, and upgrading the drainage system. Meanwhile, the Maldives Water and Sewerage Company (MWSC) has been entrusted with installing public facilities such as toilets, showers, lockers, and water supply systems for Rasfannu users.

The Ministry confirmed that land has already been allocated to MWSC for these facilities, and preparations are underway for construction to commence within the month.

The announcement follows President Dr Mohamed Muizzu’s pledge earlier this year to improve both Rasfannu and Sultan Park. While restoration work on Sultan Park is already underway, the Government has now moved forward with Rasfannu’s long-awaited upgrades.

Rasfannu, developed in 2016 during President Dr Muizzu’s tenure as Housing Minister, was originally opened as a recreational space for Malé residents, complete with barbecue areas, pavilions, and food stalls. However, due to years of limited upkeep, the facilities have deteriorated.
