The Maldives has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with a Chinese research institute to expand cooperation in aquaculture, introducing modern technology and sustainable practices into the sector.
The agreement was signed in China between the Maldives Marine Research Institute (MMRI), under the Ministry of Fisheries and Ocean Resources, and the Fisheries Research Institute of Fujian of the People’s Republic of China. MMRI Director General Mohamed Shimal signed on behalf of the Maldives, during an official visit by Minister Ahmed Shiyam.
According to the Ministry, the MoU will support collaborative research on aquaculture development, with a focus on environmentally friendly methods and innovative technologies that can be applied in the Maldives. Officials said the pact also underscores the priority both countries place on marine conservation while strengthening technical and academic exchanges.
The Ministry described the agreement as an important step in advancing the Government’s efforts to revitalise the fisheries industry and diversify opportunities for Maldivians. With 99 per cent of the country’s territory consisting of ocean, the Administration has pledged to ensure sustainable use of marine resources and maximise benefits for local communities.
