Ambassador Dr Salma Rasheed, Permanent Representative of the Maldives to the United Nations, receives the Integrity Award from the Global Center for Good Governance in Tobacco Control (GGTC)

The Maldives has been internationally recognised for its rigorous efforts to curb tobacco use, earning the Integrity Award from the Global Center for Good Governance in Tobacco Control (GGTC).

The award was presented at the Eleventh Session of the Conference of the Parties to the WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (FCTC). Dr Salma Rasheed, Permanent Representative of the Maldives to the United Nations Office in Geneva, accepted the honour on behalf of the government.

Government representatives said the award reflects international confidence in the Maldives’ sustained and coordinated work to reduce tobacco consumption. They noted that the recognition affirms the country’s deliberate policy measures and long-term commitment to public health.

Recent initiatives introduced by the government include a nationwide ban on e-cigarettes and vapes, higher duties on traditional tobacco products, age-related restrictions, and a generational ban aimed at preventing future tobacco uptake. Officials said these actions have positioned the Maldives as a leading example among FCTC member states.

The GGTC, based in Bangkok, Thailand, works globally to safeguard public health policies from tobacco industry interference. The organisation collaborates with governments and institutions to promote accountability, transparency, and stronger tobacco control frameworks.
