First Lady Sajidha Mohamed has called on the public to show greater respect, empathy, and understanding toward the challenges faced by others, particularly individuals with disabilities.
She made the remarks at the launch of the “Fahi Programme – Ekuekee Gulhigen”, an initiative by Maldives Ports Limited (MPL) aimed at creating employment opportunities for people with disabilities.
In her address, the First Lady noted that differences in ability are a natural part of human society, emphasising that many individuals with disabilities continue to make significant contributions both globally and nationally. She highlighted the need for a shift in societal attitudes, stressing that no one is without flaws and that everyone deserves compassion and dignity.
The First Lady described MPL’s initiative to offer public-sector employment to people with disabilities as a commendable and humane step that upholds respect for human dignity. She said such opportunities affirm the principle of equality and provide meaningful support to many Maldivians who face barriers to employment.
She added that the programme aligns with President Dr Mohamed Muizzu’s vision to enhance dignity and self-reliance, noting that it will enable more Maldivians with disabilities to meet their basic needs through their own efforts.
