Asphalt work has begun on Segment 1 of the Boduthakurufaanu Magu redevelopment project in the Government’s efforts to modernise one of Malé’s busiest road networks, extending from the Local Market area to the Hulhumalé Ferry Terminal.

According to the Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC), 91 per cent of the works in Segment 1, covering a 130-metre stretch up to the Shaheed Hussain Adam Building, have now been completed, with asphalt laying currently underway. The company noted that the ABC layer has already been prepared, and asphalt will be laid once the final surface preparation is complete.

MTCC confirmed that key components of the segment have already been finalised, including the utility network, water drainage system, and 87 per cent of pavement construction. As part of road-widening measures, the existing outer wall along the route was elevated by six metres and reconstructed to accommodate the expanded roadway. The upgraded section will feature a modern stormwater drainage network, a dedicated pedestrian lane, and improved road safety features.

In total, 830 metres of roadway will be redeveloped across five segments, with MTCC working around the clock to expedite progress and complete the asphalt works by the end of the month. Once finished, the four-lane road is expected to ease long-standing congestion in the capital, enhance pedestrian safety, and improve access to major Government offices, commercial centres and the main port area.

The Boduthakurufaanu Magu redevelopment project, valued at MVR 144.5 million, was awarded to MTCC by the Ministry of Construction, Housing and Infrastructure. Launched on 21 August 2025, the project is scheduled for completion within 455 days, covering one of the most heavily used sections of Malé’s outer ring road.
