The National Social Protection Agency (NSPA) has announced that over MVR 114 million has been provided in financial assistance since the introduction of Air Ambulance services in the Maldives, according to figures released in accordance to the Government’s 104 weeks milestone.

The Air Ambulance service was launched on 1 March 2024, following an agreement signed on 28 February 2024, to support medical evacuations across the country. NSPA stated that MVR 29 million was spent on the service in 2024, while MVR 85.1 million has been disbursed so far in 2025, bringing the total to MVR 114.1 million over the two-year period.

Operated by the national airline, Maldivian, the service provides rapid transport for patients facing health emergencies, ensuring timely access to advanced medical care. According to statistics from the Ministry of Health, the service has transported 1,372 patients and carried out 1,556 medical transfers between 1 March and 17 November.

Authorities have also signed a new agreement with Maldivian to expand the service internationally, with preparations underway for medical evacuation flights to United Arab Emirates and Thailand, aimed at improving access to specialised treatment abroad.

Before the establishment of the dedicated air ambulance service, patients were transported using Maldivian aircraft and MNDF helicopters. The Government has commenced its long-term goal of further strengthening emergency medical transport, including the introduction of specialised vessels to support domestic medical evacuation needs.
