Minister of Economic Development and Trade Mohamed Saeed has said the Government expects enforcement efforts against illegal foreign businesses to accelerate from next week, with stronger action planned to address a long-standing public concern.

In a post on X, the Minister said the Government’s decision to identify and take immediate action against illegal businesses operated by foreigners has strengthened ongoing efforts to find a permanent solution to an issue he described as deeply concerning to Maldivians. He added that the repeal of the 46-year-old Foreign Investment Act of 1979 and the introduction of a stronger new law reflect the Government’s commitment to closing gaps that previously allowed such activities to persist.

Minister Saeed stated that enforcement agencies, including the Ministry of Homeland Security and Technology and the Ministry of Economic Development and Trade, will undertake special interventions to curb illegal operations. He emphasised that the Government aims to ensure no foreigner is able to run a business under the guise of a Maldivian and urged the public to cooperate fully with reporting efforts.

To make reporting easier, the Ministry of Economic Development has provided an online link on its website. Reports can also be submitted through the Ministry’s hotline 3333199 and via Immigration Watch.

The Ministry said all information received will be forwarded to the National Taskforce on Combating Illegal Expatriate Operations and Businesses for immediate review and action. The Ministry also noted that many illegal foreign businesses function by using Maldivians as fronts or by operating in sectors reserved for Maldivians under the Foreign Investment Act, which protects more than 30 business areas.
