Minister of Homeland Security and Technology Ali Ihusaan has said that the Maldives has reached a defining moment in its national effort to combat drug abuse, stating that the entire State is now working in unison to save the country from the scourge of narcotics.

He made the remarks on Wednesday following the Parliament’s decision to dismiss Criminal Court Judge Uz Hussain Faiz Rashad, who is accused of involvement in drug smuggling. The minister said the case underscores the need for full accountability across all sectors, including within the judiciary and legal profession.

Minister Ihusaan expressed gratitude to President Dr Mohamed Muizzu, stating that the Administration’s firm stance reflects the resolve of the Maldivian people to confront the drug crisis. He reiterated that the Government considers the fight against narcotics one of its highest priorities.

His comments come after Parliament approved major amendments to the Drugs Act, introducing capital punishment for individuals convicted of smuggling drugs into the Maldives. Under the amendment, capital punishment may be applied only if the Supreme Court unanimously upholds the conviction; if not, offenders will face life imprisonment and fines between MVR 100,000 and MVR 10 million.

The new legislation also removes eligibility for parole, commutation, or pardons for those sentenced under these provisions, and prohibits the State from entering plea agreements in such cases.
