The Speaker of Parliament, Abdul Raheem Abdulla, has highlighted that the Parliamet’s recent legislative efforts are focused on delivering outcomes that best serve the public, amid claims that the Government is using its super-majority in the 20th Parliament for political gain.
Speaker Abdul Raheem said the institution continues to operate within the Constitution, established laws and parliamentary rules, prioritising national interest over political advantage.
The final sittings of the session were extended by three days to ensure key Government-related work was completed before the recess. The Speaker noted that the aim was to avoid any delays that could hinder the delivery of public services during the break. He also stated that legislative changes required to support the Administration’s pledges are being addressed while maintaining parliamentary oversight.
The Speaker went on to say that the Parliament is working at a pace that meets the Government’s legislative needs but remains committed to accountability. Ministers have been summoned 72 times this year, and committees continue to review the work of independent institutions.
During the last session of the year, Parliament held 28 sittings, passed 15 bills and conducted 142 committee meetings. The Speaker said the 20th Parliament intends to continue working in line with public expectations and national priorities.
