The Environmental Regulatory Authority (ERA) has warned that legal action will be taken against parties operating in violation of permit conditions, following complaints over environmental non-compliance at land reclamation projects in Kaafu Atoll.

In a statement issued on Monday, the ERA said it has received numerous complaints regarding activities that breach environmental regulations during ongoing land reclamation works. These include failure to implement required mitigation measures, sand mining outside approved areas, and the continuation of work despite the issuance of yellow alerts due to adverse weather conditions.

The Authority said it is closely monitoring the progress of reclamation projects and stressed that action will be taken in accordance with the law against any party found to be violating permit conditions.

The ERA also urged operators of land reclamation projects to strictly adhere to the procedures and safeguards outlined in approved environmental impact assessment reports, as well as the conditions specified in related permits.

Several lagoons in Kaafu Atoll are currently being reclaimed for resort development. In addition, the Government is undertaking major land reclamation projects in Hulhumalé Phase III, Rasmalé, Giraavaru Falhu and Gulhifalhu.

The Government has stated that all reclamation projects implemented for public purposes are being carried out in compliance with environmental assessment requirements and with the necessary safety and mitigation measures in place.
