The Ministry of Education has announced that MVR 70 million has been spent on renovating school buildings nationwide, with 30 new buildings scheduled for completion and use by the end of the upcoming academic year.
The update was shared by Minister of Education Dr Ismail Shafeeu on State media, where he stated that school improvement and infrastructure development have been given priority under the current administration.
The Minister said the scale of renovation work underway is the most extensive carried out by any Government to date, noting that a significant portion of the funds has been directed toward repairing structural issues that had remained unresolved for several years. He explained that MVR 30 million was utilised in the first year of the Administration, while a further MVR 70 million has been invested this year, with additional projects financed through contractor funding mechanisms.
According to the Minister, MVR 20 million has been allocated for preparations ahead of the new term, while MVR 55 million of work is progressing under contractor financing to accelerate construction and refurbishment timelines. These include classroom blocks, roofing and ceiling repairs, and other essential upgrades required to ensure schools are able to accommodate students safely for the next academic year.
He confirmed that the Government aims to complete 30 new school buildings before classes resume, including the newly developed Shaheed Ali School in Hulhumalé Phase II, which is expected to admit around 1,800 students. He reiterated that the Administration plans to continue upgrading facilities across the country to improve learning environments and address long-awaited maintenance needs.
