Minister of Social and Family Development Dr Aishath Shiham has said that 77 island councils have so far expressed interest in developing dedicated spaces for senior citizens in the atolls.
Speaking at a press conference held at the President’s Office on Monday, the Minister said the Maldives’ senior citizen population is expected to double by 2030.
The Minister highlighted the success of Israhvehinge Naadhee centres established in Malé and Hulhumalé, noting that participation by senior citizens has increased through collaboration with private organisations and relevant agencies. She said similar models are now being planned for island communities.
In addition to physical facilities, the Ministry is also working to establish Israhvehinge Naadhee operations in the atolls, including the provision of specialised training to support their management and activities.
She said the goal is to ensure that the level of satisfaction and engagement experienced by senior citizens in the capital is extended to island communities as well.
The Minister also said the Ministry is strengthening engagement with the public. Between January and October this year, more than 17,000 calls were received through the Ministry’s hotline services.
She attributed the Ministry’s progress to the dedication of its staff in both Malé and the atolls, adding that the support given by President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has been a strong source of encouragement for continued improvement in social services.
