The Managing director of Malé Water and Sewerage Company (MWSC), Abdul Matheen Mohamed has shared the company's commitment to transitioning island water production from diesel-based systems to renewable energy.
Speaking on MMTV's Bodu Khabaru Programme on Friday night, Managing director Matheen outlined the company's vision of transitioning to renewable energy for water production. He emphasised MWSC's commitment to sustainability and reducing carbon emissions through the implementation of hybrid systems that integrate solar power with diesel as a backup.
Matheen also revealed that the biggest expense in water production is the diesel required to power water plants. To address this, MWSC plans to implement hybrid systems combining solar energy with diesel as a backup. These systems will be rolled out in three additional locations next year—Kulhudhuffushi, Dhuvaafaru, and Maafushi—alongside Malé. The hybrid system for Kulhudhuffushi, in particular, will be installed early next year in collaboration with a Japanese company.
He further emphasised that carbon reduction is a core objective for the company. However, Matheen acknowledged that due to limited space in Malé City, alternative solutions will need to be explored to fully implement renewable energy systems.
MWSC, a key utility provider in the Maldives, has been actively involved in several sustainable initiatives. In August 2024, the company partnered with Flocean to introduce innovative eco-friendly subsea desalination technology.
Additionally, MWSC invested over MVR 0.5 million in various environmental activities last year, further highlighting its dedication to promoting green practices and reducing its ecological footprint.
