Male’ City Group of Hospitals (MCGH) has confirmed plans to develop a general practice (GP) clinic in Henveiru, with development to begin this month, in the next phase of the Government’s initiative to expand primary healthcare services across the Greater Malé Region.

The project is part of plan to establish six GP clinics within the capital region, with four clinics designated for Malé City and two for Hulhumalé. The first facility under the programme was opened in Maafannu in November, while construction of another GP clinic at Amaan Udhares in Hulhumalé Phase II is currently underway under a contract awarded to Fahi Dhiriulhun Corporation (FDC).

MCGH Chief Executive Officer Ibrahim Abdul Razzaq Haleem said that development work on the Henveiru clinic is scheduled to begin this month. He added that the Hulhumalé clinic being built by FDC is expected to be completed ahead of Ramadan.

The GP clinic initiative is aimed at easing congestion at major hospitals by diverting non-critical cases to community-level facilities. Health authorities have stated that the clinics will play a key role during seasonal increases in patient numbers, such as influenza outbreaks, by providing accessible frontline care and reducing pressure on specialised hospital services.

The clinics are expected to offer services including childhood immunisations, routine health monitoring, patient counselling, diagnostic services such as X-rays and blood tests, as well as referral coordination for specialist appointments when required.
