Land reclamation works have commenced for the development of the Haa Alifu Dhidhdhoo Airport, in a project also aimed to support housing initiatives and the provision of essential services on the island.

The project was inaugurated by the Minister of Finance and Planning Moosa Zameer at a ceremony held in Dhidhdhoo. The event was attended by Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL) Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director Ibrahim Shareef Mohamed, Dhidhdhoo Parliamentary Member Abdul Latheef Mohamed, and Dhidhdhoo Council President Abdulla Rasheed.

MACL said the land reclamation will add approximately 115 hectares to the island to facilitate the airport development and related infrastructure. The dredger deployed for the project has now been moved to Dhidhdhoo, and the company noted that it is among the largest in the world with a capacity of 46,000 cubic metres.

Under the phased plan, reclamation works are expected to be followed by shore protection, runway construction, and the development of airport buildings and essential services facilities. The project is intended to address land space limitations on Dhidhdhoo, enabling allocation for both the airport and housing developments.

MACL stated that the expansion will significantly increase the land area of Dhidhdhoo, supporting long-term growth and improving connectivity for the northern atoll. The initiative is part of Government efforts to enhance regional infrastructure and services, reflecting commitments made during the presidential election campaign.
