Minister of Cities, Local Government and Public Works Adam Shareef Umar has emphasised the importance of preserving the unique characteristics of islands while pursuing development projects.
Speaking at an event held in Baa Dharavandhoo on Friday to honour individuals who have contributed to various fields in the island, the Minister said development should be carried out in a manner that does not erode the distinct identity of each island.
Minister Adam Shareef Umar said every island in the Maldives has its own defining characteristics, noting that the people of Dharavandhoo are particularly well known for their hospitality.
He stressed that development projects implemented under the decentralisation system must be designed to safeguard these unique qualities, while still advancing infrastructure and services. The Minister reiterated that island development should strike a balance between progress and preservation.
While addressing the gathering, he also highlighted the importance of decentralisation in achieving sustainable island development. He said the system can only function effectively when island councils and residents work together with a shared commitment to development.
The Minister stated that cooperation between councils and the community is essential to ensure that development initiatives align with local needs while maintaining the cultural and social identity of the islands.
