President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has declared 2025 and 2026 as crucial years for fulfilling the promises made during his presidential campaign.
Speaking to residents of AA Thoddoo during his tour of North Ari Atoll and Kaafu Atoll, the President highlighted the Administration’s commitment to meeting the nation’s developmental aspirations.
Reflecting on the hurdles of 2024, President Dr Muizzu acknowledged the challenges encountered in executing his plans. He attributed these difficulties to budgetary constraints inherited from the previous administration. The budget, formulated by the former finance minister and approved under the prior parliamentary majority, was criticised by the President as being politically motivated to impede progress.
With the current parliamentary majority now backing the current Administration's proposals, President Dr Muizzu expressed optimism for the future. He asserted that the newly approved budget would facilitate the systematic implementation of the Government’s pledges, ensuring equitable progress on projects nationwide. Significant advances in infrastructure and community development are anticipated over the next two years.
The President also addressed the controversial practice of releasing prisoners during election periods, which he criticised as politically driven and lacking focus on rehabilitation. In contrast, he noted that the current Government has released only 86 individuals under lawful and structured conditions.
In December, the Cabinet approved enhanced rehabilitation programmes for prisoners under trial, a move he referenced as part of ongoing efforts to facilitate sentence commutations and remissions through systematic initiatives. President Dr Muizzu reaffirmed his commitment to justice and fairness, emphasising that his Government would prioritise development and stability while avoiding political vendettas.
The President has met with 170 councils since coming into office, reiterating his commitment to governing in close collaboration with the people. He emphasised the importance of engaging with citizens directly in their constituencies, rather than summoning representatives to the capital, arguing that this approach ensures governance that is truly responsive to the voices of the public.
