Faafu Atoll Education Centre has won the Zayed Sustainability Prize in the Global High Schools Category – South Asia, cementing a notable achievement for the Maldives and highlighting the impact of youth-led innovation in sustainability.

The award was presented during the opening ceremony of Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week, attended by Minister of Foreign Affairs Dr Abdulla Khaleel, in the United Arab Emirates.

The school was recognised for its ambitious, student-led project integrating solar and wind energy, rainwater harvesting, sustainable farming, hydroponics-based innovation, and improved water management. Together, these initiatives support food security, public health, and environmental protection within the local community.

The Maldives’ participation at Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week reflects its continued commitment to sustainability, climate action, and education-driven innovation.

Minister Dr Khaleel was accompanied by the Ambassador of the Maldives to the United Arab Emirates, Mohamed Hussain Shareef, along with Additional Secretary Khadeeja Najeeha and Assistant Director Fathimath Reena of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
