The Elections Commission (EC) of Maldives has opened applications for foreign observers and monitors to oversee the upcoming local council and women’s development committee elections.

The EC said applications from foreign observers will be accepted between 18 January and 18 February. Applicants must be at least 18 years of age and are required to observe the electoral process impartially, without campaigning for any candidate or political party.

The elections, scheduled for 4 April, will feature significantly increased digitisation compared to previous polls. The Commission said key administrative processes – including voter registration and the submission of candidate nomination forms – will be conducted online through digital platforms.

According to the permanent constituency determination report published by the Commission, a total of 626 councillors will be elected to island councils, while 52 councillors will be elected to city councils.

In 133 islands, three councillors will be elected, while 46 islands will elect five councillors each, including a council president and two female councillors. The Commission said the invitation to foreign observers reflects its continued commitment to transparency and credibility in the electoral process.
