Minister of Construction, Housing and Infrastructure Dr Abdulla Muththalib has pledged that the government’s housing projects will be completed and handed over within the current administration.
Speaking to the media following the opening of applications for the Government’s Housing for All scheme, Minister Dr Muththalib stated that, “With the grace of God, during this Administration, lands will be allocated and handed over.”
The Minister announced that the deadline for submitting applications for flats is 17 April 2026 at 11:59 p.m., while the deadline for land applications is 4 March 2026 at 11:59 p.m..
Highlighting past challenges, Minister Dr Muththalib noted that since 2008, no government has completed and handed over housing projects they initiated. He expressed confidence that this Administration will change that trend, to complete construction and ensure all flats are habitable upon delivery.
Under the Housing for All policy, the rules of the Family Housing Programme have now been published in the Government Gazette. These include regulations for allocating flats and land to residents of Malé.
This year, several new special categories have been introduced, including allocations for taxi drivers, fishing sector workers, and tourism industry employees. The scheme also provides opportunities for individuals who previously received documentation entitling them to flats but did not ultimately receive housing.
Housing has long been one of the Maldives’ most pressing social challenges, particularly in Greater Malé, where land scarcity and high costs have left many families dependent on rental housing. By introducing special categories for workers in essential sectors and families previously left out of housing allocations, the Government seeks to address long-standing inequities in access to housing.
