The Ministry of Tourism and Environment has announced that solar diesel-battery hybrid systems have been installed on more than 100 islands as part of efforts to strengthen electricity services and transition to environmentally friendly energy sources.

The installations were carried out under President Dr Mohamed Muizzu’s initiative to ensure that 33 per cent of the Maldives’ electricity generation comes from renewable energy sources by 2028. The ministry said the hybrid systems were introduced to stabilise island electricity grids and reduce reliance on diesel-powered electricity generation.

According to the ministry, the systems have significantly reduced annual diesel consumption used for power generation, cutting emissions of several tonnes of harmful gases each year. The Government believes the project will provide sustainable and reliable electricity services to rural communities while contributing to environmental protection and economic progress.

In addition, solar PV systems have been installed on 23 islands across 10 atolls under the Aspire and Arise projects. These installations have increased the country’s total new electricity generation capacity by 36 megawatts.

The ministry said the projects have improved energy efficiency and expanded access to electricity across the islands.
