Education Minister Dr Ismail Shafeeu

The Education Ministry will begin work this year to pilot the introduction of Quran as a subject in SSC examinations, Education Minister Dr Ismail Shafeeu has said.

The remarks were made at the opening of the new academic year, where the Minister said preparatory work to pilot the Quran subject for SSC examinations will begin this year, with formal inclusion planned from 2027.

Dr Shafeeu said a key priority of the education system is the development of good character among students. He announced that a special programme will be launched during the current academic year to promote positive values, good habits and mutual respect among students nationwide.

Highlighting changes in the global workplace, the Minister noted the growing use of artificial intelligence and said the coming academic year will include dedicated programmes to familiarise teachers with AI. He emphasised that the quality of education and upbringing provided to students depends largely on the skills, competence and example set by teachers, and called on educators to adapt to technological changes while maintaining an inclusive learning environment.

In his address, the Minister urged students to take responsibility for their own learning, to uphold Islamic values, obey their parents, respect one another and make full use of educational opportunities. He also called on parents to encourage students to love and respect their teachers.

Dr Shafeeu further noted that significant reforms are underway in the Maldivian education system, with several major initiatives planned to begin or continue this year. He highlighted that, in line with a pledge made by President Dr Mohamed Muizzu, the academic year has now been aligned with the fiscal year.
