Parliament has accepted an emergency motion condemning the opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) for suggesting President Dr Mohamed Muizzu should face a fate similar to that of the late President Mohamed Amin Didi.

The motion passed with 44 members voting in favour, eight against and one abstaining. It calls for a Government investigation into statements allegedly encouraging terrorist acts.

Progressive National Congress (PNC) member, Hassan Mufeed Abdul Gadir, representing the Milandhoo constituency, presented the motion, which cites the Terrorism Act and condemns rhetoric that could incite terrorist activities, even indirectly.

The controversy stems from recent remarks by MDP Chairperson and former Minister of Economic Development, Fayyaz Ismail, who implied that President Dr Muizzu might face a fate similar to that of the late President Mohamed Amin Did. These comments have drawn sharp criticism, including from Farahnaz Faisal, the former Maldivian High Commissioner to the United Kingdom, who emphasised that such rhetoric contradicts Islamic principles regarding extrajudicial killings.

The motion contends that such rhetoric represents a deliberate political strategy aimed at generating public fear and threatening an individual's life.

President Mohamed Amin Didi, the Maldives' first president following the abolition of the Sultanate, was known for championing women's rights and education. Despite his visionary leadership, he met a tragic end, suffering severe injuries during a violent uprising and ultimately dying in banishment on Vihamanafushi.

MP Mufeed has urged the Government and relevant authorities to conduct a thorough investigation into these statements.
