Vice President Uz Hussain Mohamed Latheef has urged caution against political rhetoric that threatens democratic stability, emphasising the importance of maintaining unity and upholding the rule of law in the Maldives.
The Vice President's statement comes in response to controversial remarks by Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) Chairperson Fayyaz Ismail, who compared President Dr Mohamed Muizzu's potential future to that of late President Mohamed Amin Didi.
Parliament has already acted on the matter, passing an emergency motion with 44 votes in favour to condemn the MDP. The motion, presented by Progressive National Congress (PNC)'s Hassan Mufeed Abdul Gadir, calls for investigating statements that allegedly violate the Terrorism Act through incitement and threats.
In a statement posted on his official X account, the Vice President stressed that historical lessons should serve as a guide towards national unity rather than fuelling division.
"History's lessons should guide us toward unity, not fuel a culture of division and turmoil," he stated, adding that "calling for chaos challenges the rule of law and defies our democratic and Islamic values."
His message emphasised the fundamental principle that "wrong is wrong – yesterday, today and always," highlighting the timeless nature of ethical leadership.
The statement takes on particular significance in the current political climate, where discourse has increasingly veered towards confrontational rhetoric. The Vice President stressed that leadership carries a responsibility to promote peaceful dialogue rather than discord.
