President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has reassured residents of the Sinamalé and Malé Hiyaa flats in Galolhu that eligible families will receive a special allowance of MVR 100,000, together with a waiver of all penalties on outstanding rent.

He gave the assurance during a meeting held this evening at Mulee’aage, the Official Residence of the President.

Earlier, the President decided to waive fines imposed on residents who were unable to settle outstanding payments for various reasons. He instructed the Malé City Council on 7 January 2026 to implement the waiver.

The decision applies to residents of Sinamalé Flats 1, 2, 3 and 4, and Malé Hiyaa Flats 1 and 2. The President stated that the measure is aimed at easing financial pressures and addressing long-standing concerns over structural deterioration and unresolved maintenance issues in the buildings.

Under the arrangement, where a household’s total outstanding amount exceeds MVR 100,000, the payable sum will be capped at MVR 100,000. If the outstanding amount is below that figure, it will be fully waived and any remaining balance deposited directly into the resident’s bank account. Those who have already settled the full payment for their flats will receive the full MVR 100,000.

During the meeting, residents detailed their living conditions, outstanding rent and penalty charges, and the challenges they face in meeting these obligations. In response, the President assured them that prompt action would be taken to provide relief and address the issues raised.
