A significant chlorine spill in the Kinbivau area on the Futtaru side of Hithadhoo, Addu City, has caused extensive harm to marine life and the surrounding reef.
Numerous species, including octopuses, cuttlefish, crabs, eels and various fish, have been found dead along the shore.
Local officials reported discovering approximately 15 empty 25kilogramme chlorine containers near the beach, with labels indicating expired contents. The spill has led to visible reef bleaching, raising concerns about long-term ecological damage.
Addu City Mayor Ali Nizar visited the site and expressed grave concern. In a social media post, he described the scene as severely impacted, with noticeable bleaching of the reef and widespread harm to marine ecosystems. The Mayor urged residents to avoid entering the sea in the affected area.
The incident has been reported to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and Maldives Police Service for investigation. Authorities are working to identify the source of the chlorine and the circumstances surrounding its disposal.
The mayor, deputy mayor and council members have pledged to coordinate with relevant authorities to ensure a thorough enquiry and prevent similar incidents in the future.
