Vice President Uz Hussain Mohamed Latheef states that the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) prioritises party interests in instances where upholding the Constitution requires national consideration.
He made the remarks while addressing the official launch of the campaign for People's National Congress (PNC) candidates contesting the Maafannu constituency in the upcoming Council Elections.
The Vice President said that developments following the end of the MDP administration have allowed the public to assess the party’s approach. He questioned the extent to which the MDP had worked to safeguard constitutional principles and protect the rights of citizens during that period.
Speaking on democratic governance, he noted that holding a Government accountable remains an essential element of a functioning democracy. At the same time, he alleged that after President Dr Mohamed Muizzu assumed office, the MDP utilised its parliamentary supermajority in efforts aimed at exploring avenues to remove an elected president.
He further stated that the MDP leadership has yet to outline new policy alternatives through its candidates, and instead has focused on criticising initiatives introduced by the Government.
The Vice President added that members of the public, including supporters of the MDP, are capable of forming their own judgments, and expressed confidence that voters would carefully assess competing narratives.
Commenting on decentralisation, he said discussions on the issue should be grounded in established principles and national interest. He maintained that decisions taken without such considerations could have long-term implications for the country.
The Vice President also stated that President Dr Muizzu governs in consultation with citizens and remains attentive to public concerns and aspirations.
