The People’s Majlis has approved the appointment of three Non-Resident Ambassadors nominated by President Dr Mohamed Muizzu.
The nominations were reviewed by Parliament’s Committee on Foreign Relations before being presented for a vote. The President had proposed the appointments of Abdul Ghafoor Mohamed as Non-Resident Ambassador to Cuba, Dr Ali Naseer Mohamed as Non-Resident Ambassador to Brazil, and Shiruzimath Sameer as Non-Resident Ambassador to Mexico.
Abdul Ghafoor Mohamed’s appointment was approved with 57 votes, while Dr Ali Naseer Mohamed received 58 votes in favour. Shiruzimath Sameer’s nomination was passed with 56 votes.
Abdul Ghafoor Mohamed currently serves as the Maldives’ Ambassador to the United States, a position he has held since 2022. Dr Ali Naseer Mohamed is the Maldives’ Permanent Representative to the United Arab Emirates, and Shiruzimath Sameer is serving as Ambassador to Antigua and Barbuda.
With parliamentary approval secured, the three diplomats will assume their additional responsibilities as Non-Resident Ambassadors upon formal appointment by the President.
