State Electric Company Limited (STELCO) has begun operating new generator sets in five islands, following the dispatch of units to 12 islands as part of peak season preparations.
According to STELCO, power generation services have now commenced using the newly delivered generator sets in Alifu Alifu Rasdhoo, Kaafu Thulusdhoo, Alifu Dhaalu Mahibadhoo, Alifu Dhaalu Dhigurah, and Kaafu Gulhi. The company said installation works are continuing in the remaining islands where generator sets have already been shipped.
STELCO confirmed that the most recent installation was completed in Kaafu Gulhi, where a new 800-kilowatt generator has been commissioned. With the addition of the new unit, Gulhi’s total power generation capacity has increased to 1,904 kilowatts, strengthening the island’s ability to meet higher electricity demand during peak periods.
As part of peak season preparations, STELCO also confirmed that a 1,200-kilowatt generator set at the Vilimalé powerhouse has been commissioned. The company said the new unit has significantly increased generation capacity in Vilimalé and will contribute to improving the reliability and stability of electricity services on the island.
The utility provider said the dispatch and commissioning of new generator sets form part of its annual preparedness programme to ensure uninterrupted and reliable electricity supply for households and businesses during periods of heightened demand, particularly during Ramadan.
