State Minister at the Ministry of Cities, Local Government and Public Works, Uz Moosa Fathuhee Adam, has stated that any attempt to destabilise the Government would have serious consequences for the national economy.
He made the remarks while speaking on the People’s National Congress (PNC) campaign programme Dhiveheenge Raajje, broadcast across local media platforms.
Uz Fathuhee said that when President Dr Mohamed Muizzu first assumed office, political opponents attempted to portray the Maldives as heading towards bankruptcy, drawing comparisons with the economic crisis experienced by Sri Lanka. He stated that such narratives were intended to undermine public confidence.
He added that after the economy was stabilised and the country placed on a forward trajectory, opposition rhetoric had intensified, with calls to remove the Government and claims that installing a mayor could “bring down” the administration.
Uz Fathuhee warned that such actions would not affect a single individual or political group alone, but would instead damage the national economy. He said efforts are currently underway to address foreign currency pressures while maintaining conditions that allow citizens to carry out daily activities without additional hardship.
The State Minister also criticised the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), claiming that significant development initiatives were not delivered during its two terms in office. He referred to the concession of Velana International Airport (VIA) to GMR during the party’s first administration and alleged that the ventilator procurement case was a defining issue of its second term, stating that questions remain over the ventilators and associated funds.
Uz Fathuhee further alleged that loans were secured against State assets during the MDP administration, while arguing that tangible benefits to citizens from those borrowings were limited.
He said large-scale development projects are now progressing under the current leadership and maintained that the opposition would not be able to obstruct these efforts. Concluding his remarks, Uz Fathuhee stated that the public would not accept attempts to hinder national progress under the pretext of election campaigning.
