Baarah MP Ibrahim Shujau has criticised the performance of Malé Mayor Ali Azim of the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), stating that he would give a score of “zero out of 100”.

Shujau made the remarks in a post responding to President Dr Mohamed Muizzu’s Presidential Address this year, in which the President announced the completion of air conditioning works in the main prayer halls and women’s prayer areas of four mosques ahead of Ramadan.

He said that in line with President Dr Muizzu’s pledge, the mosque air conditioning works had been completed before Ramadan. However, he stated that Masjid al Sheikh Qasim bin Al-Thani in Hulhumalé, which falls under the Malé City Council led by Mayor Azim, had not completed its works.

Referring to development projects carried out in the Malé area in line with the President’s pledges, Shujau pointed to the Boduthakurufaanu Road development project, stating that the Government completed asphalt layering works on one of the capital’s main roads within 68 days. In contrast, he claimed that within a year, tile installation and ceiling works at a mosque in the Malé area had not been completed under the Mayor’s oversight.

Shujau urged the public to reflect on these matters ahead of the upcoming Council Elections.

Under a Government initiative to air condition main prayer halls and women’s prayer areas in mosques accommodating more than 800 worshippers, four mosques in Malé were completed and opened to the public before the start of Ramadan, as stated in President Dr Muizzu’s Presidential Address.

The mosques are Masjid Al-Furuqan, Masjid Al-Jalaaluddin, Viyafaari Veringe Mosque and Masjid Umar bin Al Khattab in Hulhumalé.
