North Henveiru MP Ahmed Aifan has called for Mayor Adam Azim to step down and transfer the administration of the Malé City Council to Deputy Mayor Mohamed Areesh.
Speaking to MMTV during a door-to-door campaign in West Maafannu, attended by President Dr Mohamed Muizzu, MP Aifan criticised the leadership of the current Mayor.
MP Aifan said the administrative system of the Malé City Council had been adversely affected by what he described as weak governance practices, resulting in declining standards of municipal service delivery. He alleged that essential services had not been adequately maintained, contributing to growing public dissatisfaction.
Referring to the condition of public facilities, MP Aifan stated that upkeep of mosques and related amenities had been neglected, and that basic maintenance and renovation works had not been carried out as required. He argued that such shortcomings reflected administrative failures within the council.
The MP said the leadership transition should be carried out, urging that responsibility for the council be formally transferred to the Deputy Mayor to ensure continuity of governance and the restoration of public services.
Residents in several areas of Malé City have also raised concerns over service delivery by the council in recent months, with complaints focusing on maintenance of public spaces and municipal infrastructure.
