The Maldives Immigration carried out a large-scale operation yesterday, questioning 60 foreigners across different parts of Malé City.
Authorities confirmed that none of those searched were taken into custody.
The operation forms part of a wider Government initiative to identify and address the presence of undocumented expatriates in the country, particularly those engaged in unregistered businesses and unlawful activities. Immigration officials stated that individuals found violating Maldivian laws are being deported without further opportunity.
Official figures highlight that 11,496 undocumented foreigners have been deported over the past two years. Between 17 November 2025 and 31 January 2026, an additional 228 foreigners illegally residing in the Maldives were deported.
The Government has also begun shutting down businesses operated by foreigners without proper permits. Under the current phase of enforcement, foreigners working for employers other than those specified in their quota have until April 2 to regularise their status. Authorities have stated that from next year, any undocumented expatriates identified will face immediate deportation.
