The Ministry of Cities, Local Government and Public Works has announced that park sets required to establish children’s parks in 14 islands have been dispatched, as part of President Dr Mohamed Muizzu’s pledge to ensure that every island without a park is provided with one.

President Dr Muizzu made the pledge during visits to several islands in 2024, after being informed that the islands did not have designated spaces to play. He subsequently decided that children’s parks would be developed in all islands lacking such facilities before the end of 2026.

The Ministry stated that arrangements have been made to develop children’s parks in 57 islands under the initiative.

The project is being implemented in collaboration with Government-owned companies, including Road Development Corporation (RDC), Fenaka Corporation Limited, State Trading Organization (STO), and Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC).

According to the Ministry, the latest batch of park sets has been sent to two islands assigned to RDC, six islands assigned to Fenaka, two islands being implemented under STO’s corporate social responsibility projects, and four islands where works are being carried out by MTCC.

Under the first phase of the initiative, agreements were signed on 29 March 2025 with three State-owned enterprises to develop parks in 12 islands. In the second phase, agreements were signed on 10 November 2025 to carry out park development works in an additional 30 islands, bringing the total number of islands covered under the two phases to 42.

The Ministry noted that the remaining eight islands require only park sets to complete the initiative.
