The Maldives Food and Drug Authority (MFDA) has urged food vendors and businesses to stop packaging food and beverages in reused single-use plastic bottles, citing potential health risks.
In a statement, MFDA said it has observed some businesses selling food and drinks in empty water and soft drink bottles that were originally intended for single use. The Authority said these bottles are made from polyethylene terephthalate (PET) and are designed to be discarded after use.
MFDA said reusing PET bottles for packaging food products increases the risk of plastic contamination, which may pose health hazards to consumers. The Authority noted that various food and beverage items have been found packaged in reused bottles, contrary to food safety guidelines.
The Authority has instructed retailers and food vendors to avoid reusing single-use plastic bottles and bags for commercial food packaging. MFDA said enforcement measures will be taken in line with existing food safety regulations.
